In late 2020 I decided to take up film photography as a creative outlet. By then the pandemic had endured for nearly a year and I was living alone for the first time in my life after experiencing some personal losses. This was a difficult period for me to navigate and the lack of social connection in my day-to-day had taken a toll on my already diminishing mental health.
Armed with three cameras, a car, and sometimes my two dogs, I set off in the pursuit of creativity with the hopes that this new hobby would aid in treating my depression. Photography took me out of the house and led me to places I had never explored before around the lower mainland, Fraser Valley, and further east to the Kootenays. It helped me rebuild this connection to my soul and my hometown that I thought I had lost. With this newfound independence I was forced to enjoy my own company and later came to accept that it is okay to be alone.
My work is a reflection of myself, and represents this transformative period in my life where I grew to appreciate that even though I was battling all of this trauma and pain, I still had the ability to see, think, hear, and feel.
To be alive is a beautiful thing, and that is enough.
